So www.moosequest.net was down again. Same reason as the last outage; it's been discovered that whenever the power goes out and my battery BackUPS kicks in, it under powers the server thus killing the power supply. I'm assuming it's not getting the appropiate power it needs either.
The worst part was the power outage was due to the fact that the maintenance guy turned off my power "by mistake". I noticed when the power came back on that there was copper smell in the air. Looking for the source, I found the server power supply hot to the touch and not spining either fan. $30.00 later, a new power supply and no battery BackUPS hopefully this won't take down the server.
To resolve this, I'm looking into new UPS for my server, one that supports SuSE Linux, and while I'm at it, I'm going to add UPS for my electronics. |

So it was time to restore the TeraServer using the Firmware Updater. Version 1.0, which is what was loaded on my server, was outdated by two years. The version now is 3.03. I had the hardest time getting the machine in "Emergency Mode" which finally registered after I held the power button for about 90 seconds. Loaded the firmware and got ready to restore the data.
I did not have to restore any data. 22 Days of backup and $350 in restoration software and equipment later, if I had just did the above procedure I would've saved myself hours and hours of frustration. |

After two weeks between waiting for the software being available to purchase I was able to restore all my data. Well all the data I needed, for some reason the Backup data will not be recoverable... Small price to pay, but I don't mind. It's not like I can't rebackup everything...
Last tuesday was Phillies Night, I had a luxury suite at the Citizens Bank Ballpark. Awesome fun with friends. I couldn't believe how sweet the suite was. We had food, bev's and beer. Of course the Phillies lost but it still was a great time... My new endeavour is to own one of those. Check my Facebook Badge to see pics from the game.

Phase 1 is complete. I've gathered everything and hooked up everything... Well almost everything I need to find a place to hook up the externals to transfer the data... Go figure...

After extracting all the disks from the TeraServer I labeled them appropiately and prepped the enclosures

All drives have been moved into enclosures and hooked up to the USB port.
Looks like I'm going to need to take a trip to Target to grab another surge protector... This is so stupid... I just need ONE MORE PLUG! |

So yesterday early morning, I decided to send me 1.5TB media server for a reboot. Normal practice, as sometimes the media server gets hung up. Recently, I had emptied about 170GB on it also, so I figured it would nice to get a fresh start. On it's way back up I heard this loud noise...
E04 - Cannot load Kernel
Yeah, that obviously can't be good. Sent it for another restart and it started successfully however it continued to say, "Now Booting..." After about 9 hours, I decided it was time to call tech-support. Of course that was when everything went bad, and I knew not to restart it at anytime, but I went ahead and sure enough the RAID 5 is not corrupt. Luckily there is a enough community support out there. Basically I will need to do a recovery through Ubuntu on my Mac (apparently the only way to do it is with a Mac), and to also do a firmware upgrade.
I've already got the parts ordered, just waiting for the stores to open up. Here's the part list
- 4xSATA Hard Drive Enclosures
- 2x1TB External HDD
