So what makes you a valuable asset to the team? What basic techniques can you use to better yourself in the game, and how can you learn them and help contribute them to the team. Focusing on three topics, Communication, Coordination and Execution, I'll go over the basics of BFBC2 Strategic Gameplay so when you're on the field you can operate smoothly.
Communication
Communication is key in this game. Listening to fellow player's instructions or information about the enemy (intel) is pertinent to your success in the game. Before getting into too much detail, you must be on common ground with terms when you're communicating with your squad mates. Saying things like, "over there" or "that thing" or any other vague description can disrupt your teams thought process and get everyone killed.
Whether you are defending or offending establish a compass-like representation of your surroundings. Battlefield BC2 doesn't have a compass like Vietnam or other games so you have to improvise. I always like to use our base as to the South, the enemy base to the North, and then the corresponding directions related to those compass directions. When you spot someone let everyone know what you spotted and where it is in relation to either you, or a landmark on the map.
"Enemy tank spotted to the North of crate Bravo."
"There is a sniper camped on the hills to the East over looking our base."
Use your spotting by pressing the select button, and in combination of your audio cues the appropriate team member can execute their actions to clear the base of that threat. You will hear me always give a enemy call-out with a location or even bearing (90 degrees east), and the direction their heading along with any additional information.
"I've got a 120 MM tank on approach from the North heading southbound. He is about 500ft from crate Bravo." - Sure it's not an exact calculation, but it's enough information to get somebody over there to handle the situation. I'll say 1 mile out sometimes to indicate they are far away for instance.
Let your teammates know when you die and secondly how you died. Simply saying F! or Crap this guy blew me away might get your teammates killed. Especially if we're in urban warfare where LOS is a challenge. BFBC2 gives you a kill cam, and enough information about the player who killed you including what they killed you with and any perks they have attached to their kit. Only you can see that.
"Damn, I just got killed by an engineer [insert name], he's across the street to the east of our location. He's not moving and he's running Body armor. BTW he's got an XM8 Compact." You might have to use visual cues to see which direction someone is heading. It will take time to learn this.
State your intent with support vehicles. "I've got the 30MM tank, I'm going to lead into the bank and then immediately head to the right of crate Bravo." This tells me several things. First it tells me support is on the front line, and I might want to be cooperative and spawn engineer. I know I can get on a quad, and move in behind him and then sprint to an objective or coordinate a pin maneuver on the enemy (discussed later in advanced strategies). I know if I'm driving a tank that I will want to be on his or her flank to either side, and to also eliminate any potential threats. We sometimes on get 1-2 tanks. Both tanks should not be used as assault pieces. And they should never be used for bombardment unless its an extreme situation where we may have an impenetrable defense. There will be more information about how to use light and heavy support vehicles and also how to use the convoy system.
Coordination (Offensive)
Kit selection and understanding the flow of operations on the battlefield is also important. Whoever is squad or battle leader will need to paint the picture of what types of infantry is needed. Sometimes there will be specific loadouts that you will use for certain boards. Whichever loadout you choose you will need coordinate with the rest of team with your role. This means no sniping. I have only come across one effective offense sniper and even he puts down the longbow and gets on the ground with the squad. When running a squad with a 2-by-2 configuration, one part of the squad will be focused on the crate, and the other will provide support. Crate team will loadout properly and focus on two objectives.
The loadout for Crate Team is as follows:
- Point-man - Use a medium to long-range class and adapt your perks to the board at hand. You will get additional instructions as to what secondary equipment you can use if you so need to ask.
- Short-range support - This is a flexible type class that may have a shotgun or Sub-Machine game, and be able to maneuver quickly to either revive, provide cover fire or help bring down enemy tanks if you see fit!
Crate Team Objectives:
Find the least confrontation route to the crate.
Do not engage enemies that are not in your direct path or with 160 degrees of your viewing angle. Meaning a scoped up sniper who is in a window, is a target you can skip. Keep you ears open for Radar Ping and stop moving if you hear it. Stop turning, stop moving, crouch and hold. You will be able to hear the enemy approach as they come looking for you. Once clear, move. Arm the crate and cover the crate from two opposite directions. If your squad mate dies move closer and check to ensure it's not being disarmed.
Destroy or Capture Enemy Armor.
If its available for the taking, take it. Use it to your advantage. If you see enemy armor, its dangerous to the entire team. Call it in to the group, spot it on the HUD and then proceed to take it out. Once you destroy it, you will need to confirm that all inhabitants are dead and report that back into the group.
The loadout for Support Team is as follows:
Support-Surveillance - This role needs to understand where the enemy is and prioritize the threats that are on the enemy defense or attack. If there are situations that require the assistance of Crate Team you have prioirty to override their objective and guide them to where they need to go. This role is normally played by myself.
Support-Rescue - This is one the more fun jobs on the team. Revive, or give ammo. Transport teams, pilot chopper, for extraction, etc. You're job is to coordinate the transport and vehicle situation for the entire squad.
Coordination (Defensive)
Kit selection is also imperative to success on defense, however the group should not be split up. There needs to be constant monitoring of the battlefield and the enemy needs to be assessed on a priority level. Snipers are the lowest priority. Enemy Support is the highest. Someone must provide radar over both crates while the rest of the group patrols. The most effective kit is the engineer. Always run with the M136 AT4 because it has the best impact on armor, and has some manipulation to increase accuracy. Remember, 30MM/120MM tanks are the weakest in the rear and in their tracks. Try to avoid firing rockets in the turret's LOS so you do not get spotted from your rocket exhaust trail. Anything that is moving fast needs to be notified to the team. If you are dead and spawning use the zoomed out camera view to acknowledge the targets path and then move to intercept when you spawn.
Execution
Our team's goals on offense is to get the crates as fast as possible. Don't be sloppy and don't get your teammates killed. If you are designated for Secret Mission provide Sit Reps or situation reports about what you're doing, and what you've seen. On offense is key to clear and move. If the squad route has taking you to a building do your best to find the best vantage points for securing the building and guard the entrances. Once enough recon has been establish, the next target we be identified and should move.
Every vehicle should be used appropriately. Do not use any vehicle to arm the crate. What does that mean? If you find yourself on a killing rampage and your teammates are getting raped, pull back and assist them. If you are without crew in a Blackhawk don't fly around looking cool. The Quad has two seats, unless your on secret mission, don't use it for personal gain. There will be more information on what the roles and responsibilities for each vehicle.
Whenever you clear a crate, don't immediately move to the next crate. Make sure you don't have any folks coming to clear you first. Establish control of the position recon and then listen for instructions. If a teammate gets stranded or needs help, go help them. Its good comradery and will not help you build your skills but will help you learn how another player plays, and become a great support asset to the team.
MQ's Words of Wisdom - Each article I will stress some focus points and strategies that you should carry with you always. No one gets left behind and I mean it. We win together, and we sacrifice ourselves for victory.
- Keep everyone alive, and save your teammates if possible. Even if it means running out into the open and reviving them. That goes a long way to keeping the MOMENTUM of our team. It becomes a cyclical type strategy and can be disruptive to the enemy teams strategy. You have 10 seconds or more to revive a teammate and let them know your coming.
- Blackhawk Down! - Go get those guys. They are important to our team and chances are they landed behind enemy lines. This makes for a great spin off sometimes from the monotony of grabbing the crate.
- You do not give the enemy our vehicles. If you are in enemy base with 10 health left on the tank, ride that thing into the ground. Do not let our enemies have it. On the contrary when the enemy makes a mistake and leaves a vehicle. Don't blow it up, acquire the vehicle bring it to a safe place in our base. Someone will repair it and make good use of it.
- Remember you role. It's important you focus on that and dominate, because you are a part of a whole. Sometimes you can flex to someone elses position but remember that you need to flex back.
